Dreams Las Mareas

If there is a right way to start a vacation, it’s with lounging. Vacations should start with champagne, mojitos, and a beautiful view. At least in my opinion they should. With that in mind, I’m writing to you poolside from La Cruz, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. We’re about an hour and a half from Liberia and miles away from any kind of city or town. It’s gorgeous and just the kind of break I need to start 2016 off right.

I’ve been told that this time of year, the Guanacaste region is quite windy. It is. But it’s a different kind of windy, it’s warm, not unlike a late summer breeze on Toronto island, but it smells like the ocean and hibiscus flowers. So really the two have literally nothing in common… Aside from wind.

Everyone here is smiling, aside from one lone pre-teen who was sporting Adidas tear always (those are cool again?) and looking like his mother forced him to join her in paradise. Poor kid. One day I’m sure he will thank his mother. Kids do that, right? Mum have I thanked you lately? If not, thanks for waiting until your 50’s to really see the world because you spent your 30’s and 40’s making sure that I did. Although you should know those travels inspired my tattoo which I guess means that it was indirectly inspired by you. Right?

While my mum is busy writing angry comments on Facebook about that last sentence let’s talk about amenities… Dreams Las Mareas has multiple pools, beach front access and a seemingly endless supply of cocktails. I took a walk down to the beach earlier and as you leave the resort there’s a stationary little boat with ‘to-go drinks’. In Costa Rica we don’t go anywhere without a cocktail, not even the beach. Especially not the beach.

While today may be about relaxing and enjoying the multiple pools surrounded by happy lizards and singing parrots tomorrow we’re off on the Adrenaline Excursion while involves a canopy tour, tubing down the Rapids of the Rio Negro, and horseback rides to natural volcanic thermal springs. On Tuesday we head to the sloths… So while it all starts poolside stay tuned for the many adventures to come.

It’s beautiful! Clear water and no issues with garbage at all. Most of Costa Rica was very very clean.

Did you have any issues with your stay at this resort? We are looking to book but older reviews were not so great, I am hoping they have worked out their kinks?

We didn’t! A couple of notes though: The drive up to the resort is a little bumpy roads in CR aren’t that great for the most part. Don’t order anything that sounds too ‘American’ the quesadillas are great, the burgers not so much. Tipping your bartenders is encouraged and will make your stay more pleasant (as with any resort). Make your way down to the beach, it’s gorgeous!

Thank you so much! We are looking at staying over a week so there we will defiantly be relaxing on the beach some. Where all the restaurants and bars open? I read one review where they only had 2 open their entire stay. after 10 days that would get kinda boring I would think. Should we get our currency exchanged for tipping?

I recommend getting American money for tipping, if you can. We actually tried all of the restaurants and there’s lots to eat in near by La Cruz.
